New install results in just 99s

I have just installed Slack 10.0 on my laptop (Toshiba) for the umpteenth time using various options from completely customized to completely default. Each time it looks like it installs properly. When I boot, though, the only thing on the screen is
L 99 99 99 99 99 99... etc for about six lines of 99s.
What did I do wrong?

hi there

boot from the 1st cd

then after u enter the root prompt

mount ur slackware root partiton to some drive

chroot to that location
for example if u mount that to /tmp/test
chroot /tmp/test

then run
lilo

see if u get if any errors

also look for
/etc/lilo.conf ,and post it here if the again ur system does not work

regards
