Yes you can, you can even just install over the top of Windows. The installer will ask you whether you want to use the whole disk or to share it between Linux and Windows - depending on the distro.

When you go to install, have the installer use the whole disk - Windows is then gone and your computer won't have crashed.

Technically, no. However as XavierP says, the installer can partition the drive for you if a default option works for you.

Simply installing Linux will "get rid of Windows" (again as XavierP says.) Be aware that means all files you have not backed up will be gone.

When the first Slackware CD boots you will be presented with the choice of just hitting enter which will boot the bare.i kernel. But, if memory serves you previously stated you have a scsi drive. So instead of just hitting enter, hit F2 then F3. You will be presented with a list of available kernels. Choose the scsi enabled kernel that best matches your scsi controller and type in the kernel name then hit enter. I use adaptec.s for my scsi drive:-) After it boots up you will then log-on as root, type in root, hit enter. Then at the root prompt type in this command to start-up the partitioner. This will of course remove all data from your HD (back-up data as needed). You'll need to create at least two partitions, one swap and one root.

#cfdisk /dev/sda
