i download slackware 12.1 iso image

Sorry, i m new in linux OS
I want to quit using windows vista in my new laptop but i want to try a live dvd to see if slackware or any linux distribuition works good im my hp G 7000 is new

Im from Portugal, chose slackware because i have a manual.

What exactly do you want help with? Slackware doesn't have a live CD, but there may be other Slackware-based distributions that do. Obviously, there are generally other distributions that have live CDs available.

If you want to test out Slackware with a live CD you can download Slax, it's a live CD built off of slackware

I have Slackware 12.1 running on a new HP Laptop (HP Compaq 8510W). I was pleasantly surprised that the wireless worked "out of the box". Even the proprietary Intel firmware was already there. I have not yet tackled power management or other "laptop issues".

I would not normally recommended Slackware for a beginner, but anyone with reasonable computer skills can get it going.

Welcome to LQ & Slackware®.

I would suggest that you try 'easYs-4.1' which is based on Slackware®. The install is gui based therefore easier for the person who is comfortable within that environment.

In a Slackware forum, I'd like to see that newcomers are not being referred to a parasitic distro like Easys, but instead taught how to use Slackware itself. The newcomer will benefit in the long term, and Slackware too.

Why do you call easYs® a parasite distribution?

The distro is easy to install and is Slackware® based. Selective advise shows prejudice when you don't allow others to use a tool that may lead them to a better OS.

You can like what you want. I feel that nothing was wrong in my post nor do I want to restrict my advise in the manner that you suggest.

I do a lot to help the Slackware® community. Yet I still see a lot of zealous posts about Slackware® suggestions. Sometimes individuals are not comfortable jumping in at the level of a OS like Slackware®. If a means to get them into using Slackware® dictates a distro based on Slackware, then so be it. Even Slax® can be intimidating for some newbies.

I do feel that Slackware®, newbie and the community will benefit in the long when a user is introduced to alternate(s). That will eventually lead them to Slackware®.

Eric, don't get me wrong. I do respect your advise and your contributions to the Slackware® community. I just don't agree with your point of view concerning this point. Slackware® is a great distro and I do encourage people to use it. There are times that Slackware® itself will not meet the requirements of some newbies.

I want to tank you for the info, but the problem is that i want to change to someting stable not quit and after dont have nothing this laptop has 2 years of warranty and i dont want to lose the warranty because of a mistake...

I can understand this point of view in a forum which is exclusively Slackware. The Slackware sub-forum here does not quite qualify. I now typically read LQ by using "View Latest Posts" and I often do not notice which sub-forum is in use.

Your admonition makes some sense for someone who wants to use Slackware (and understands why), but even that person might well be better off with something like Zenwalk.

But, for the greenhorn who stumbles in here with no Linux experience, the best advice is very often "do not start with Slackware or any of its progeny."
