Alright, I"ve got the ol' XP corp install right now. I also have another ntfs partition with iso's, music, documents, etc. Basically, I have a 160 gb harddrive cut in half- one with Windows, other with stuff. I also have a copy of Partition Magic.
I've been trying this: Insert an EXT2 linux partition, proceeded by Swap, after my windows, but before my stuff. So:
WINDOWS | swap | Linux | STUFF
So, I boot the slack CD's, target the EXT2 partition, and begin the install. I guess the next part is where I'm screwing up...?
I choose to do an expert Lilo config. This is the order I take:
Add Linux
Add Windows XP
Install Lilo
Reboot
The linux will boot, but the XP will not. It will sometimes appear as hidden. (I actually haven't gotten Slack to boot yet, but got the prompt, and was stuck when StartX gave me errors).
I"m writing to the master boot record. Sometimes I can get the windows to appear, sometimes not; either way, it will start to boot, have an error, then boot back to Lilo.
well i am sure an expert can come up with an easier solution but i suggest just reinstall slack, and with lilo chose "simple setup" (was called like that i guess)
i also dual boot, winxp and slack and "simple setup" worked without any problem for me.
use the winxp-bootmanager. just add your linuxOS like this....
so you have :
hda1=XP
hda2=swap
hda3=Linux
hda4=stuff
- run liloconfig and don t install it in the MBR but use the second option. ( bootsector )
lilo will install on the first sector of hda3
- mount your XP partition ( if it s not mounted already )
for this example on /mnt/win-c
- copy the bootsector of hda3 to a file on hda1 with :
- check if the file "bootsec.lin" exists on your win-c (hda1) partition.
- reboot , and XP should start ( i guess you got that right )
- in the start-menu, right mouseclick on " this computer " choose properties->advanced->startup settings-
edit boot.ini....( or something like that, i have a dutch version of XP ) anyway...
after the line starting with "micosoft windows xp....etc. " add a new line :
Linux = bootsec.lin
- save the file.
make sure the timeout setting is 30 seconds or so (i think it is in the same menu)
-close all and reboot. now you should get a choice at startup ( XP or Linux ) for 30 sec.
erreta:.....
in last message where it reads
"microsoft windows XP....etc " should read "multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP....etc"
" Linux= bootsec.lin " should read "c:\bootsec.lin= "Linux"
nothing s perfect...
