Boot: bare.i
Root: CD, Boot from CD also. CD 1 only
I have a 40gb hard drive, I have partion 1 set to 700mb (less than double my RAM, btw), it is type Linux Swap. Partion 2 is 701mb to the end, set to type Linux.
I run SETUP, it pops up. I go through ADDSWAP, it works fine. I go to TARGET part, it asks me which one to use, I select the only one, Format only, Ext2 filesystem.
Then source, I choose 'auto', it chooses the CD I have.
Then I choose the packages I want (Turns out, Default selections). I install ALL when it asks me, it goes through.
PROBLEM 1:
It installs package D. Then it installs it again. And again...And again....basically, while(1)Install_D();
PROBLEM 2:
Well, I figure that maybe I can just try again. I do all the stuff the same. This time it CAN'T install D, it says can't find some Directory.
PROBLEM 3:
I say to myself, there has to be a way to install it without CD. I see on website install from ISO, I do exactly as it says. It goes to add the files and it instantly says 'Setup Done'! But.....I reboot and their are no files, it won't boot linux.
My sys specs:
64mb Nvidia GeForce MX 420
AMD Athlon MP, 2200+
Two CD, Two HD (Both 40gb, Western Digital. hda has Windows ME (See why I want Slak?) CD-1 is CD-R 52x, CD-2 is CD-RW 52x48x52x)
She's able to boot from CD ROM, but not to recognize it !!!!
The Linux Red Hat 8 installation boots from CD, ok, asks for language and keyboard choices, ok, but then it asks for packages location: HD / CD ROM / etc.
I choose CD ROM
she asks what kind of CD ROM, but she has only one choice: SCSI
I choose the unique choice.
she asks which driver must try..... and has many of them in a list.
I tried every one.
Every time, she loops back to ¿what kind of CD .... ? as if my answer was no correct.
Anyway, I can't go on from that loop away with the installation.
In an older machine, Pentium I 133MHz with 32 MbRAM, I've installed the same distribution without trouble. (it runned slowly, but ran at the end)
If any of you have the key for my installation problem, wellcome ! Thank you.
Problem 1 & 2 sounds like a bad CD to me. Problem 3 occurs because you did not properly select the source. For instance, suppose you have mounted the ISO at /mnt/iso. You'd need to set the source to /mnt/iso/slackware not /mnt/iso. In other words, you need to point the installer to the directory containing installation tree (ie the a, ap, d and so on directories). The installer does not confirm their existance, nor does it give you a chance to correct it if you get it wrong. It instead does exactly what you describe, an instantaneous install where nothing actually gets installed. With the CD, this doesn't happen because the installer automatically tacks on the "slackware" so that it looks in the correct place, but with any other source it does not and assumes you know where it should look.
