I am setting up a v2555us laptop with Slackware 32 15.0 and notice there doesn't seem to be recognition of battery state of charge. Any suggestions as to how I might chase this down? Thanks.
That is an old system. Do you have a working battery installed? Are you using it on battery, or plugged in all the time?
KDE, you should have a small triangle on the bar at the bottom of the screen Have you looked in there for the battery and brightness? If the battery is at 100%, the indicator on the task bar disappears. You will only see it then, if you click on the triangle, then the icon for battery and brightness.
