13.1 hangs up while loading, at usb optical mouse

While loading 13.1 the following sequence appears on the screen
Quote:
INIT: cannot execute /etc/rc.d/rc.4
.
.
INIT: cannot execute /etc/rc.d/rc.4
INIT: Id "x1" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
INIT: cannot execute /sbin/agetty
.
.
INIT: cannot execute /sbin/agetty
INIT: Id "c6" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
usb 2-1: new low speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 2
usb 2-1: New USB device found, idVendor=0458, idProduct=003a
usb 2-1: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, Serial Number=0
usb 2-1: Product: Optical Mouse
usb 2-1: Manufacturer: Genius
usb 2-1: USB disconnect, address 2
The previous 6 lines are repeated for addresses 3 thru 12, and then the screen goes blank. The same pattern repeats if I substitute a different usb mouse.

Originally 13.1 did load quite happily with this mouse.

I can think of the following scenario:

Did you upgrade your Slackware 13.1 using slackpkg? If so, are you perhaps running a 32bit Slackware but have you uncommented a 64bit Slackware mirror in /etc/slackpkg/mirrors ? If that is the case, you will now have a lot of programs on your harddisk that are unable to start because they are 64bit and your 32bit kernel refuses to support them.

I did upgrade and am 32bit, but as far as I know I've never edited /etc/slackpkg/mirrors. So perhaps I got the 64bit packages by mistake. Either way I get to reinstall, and be more attentive to details in future. Thank you for your help.
