By chance I noticed that a gconf schema file for xchat namely
apps_xchat_url_handler.schemas is put in
/usr/etc/gconf/schemas/ .
It might be nice to have It in
/etc/gconf/schemas/ like the others gconf schema files.
Adding
--sysconfdir=/etc to configure should do the trick!
I tried more complex solutions on the SlackBuild such as:

make install DESTDIR=$PKG GCONF_DISABLE_MAKEFILE_SCHEMA_INSTALL="1"
export GCONF_CONFIG_SOURCE="$(gconftool-2 --get-default-source)"
gconftool-2 --makefile-install-rule $PKG/etc/gconf/schemas/apps_xchat_url_handler.schemas >& /dev/null
but It never worked...
