x won't load in slack 10.0

just installed slack 10.

it loads up fine, i log in as root (at the console), & then i type "startx"

it says it's loading x, & then it flashes the gui login, & goes black... ctrl + alt +f* still does the consoles though, but f7 flashes the gui for a split second & then goes black.

any clues?? what to look for, what to try, where to check stuff??

also, i accidentally chose a retarded font while installing, & i want to change it back so it boots to the regular default... it loads up with the default, but then it will change to the goofy one. i know setfont, but that won't change it back permanently

For the font thing: run pkgtool as root, go to Setup then setconsolefont (near the end).

About X, try xorgsetup to configure the X server.

so i did xorg setup, & now when i try a startx, i get a fatal server error, no screens found.

i check the /var/log/Xorg.0.log & it says:

that was the conf file generated by xorgconf

anyway, i took this part:

Section "Monitor"
#DisplaySize 310 230 # mm
Identifier "Monitor0"
VendorName "DEL"
ModelName "DELL E771a"
HorizSync 30.0 - 70.0
VertRefresh 892881472.0 - 0.0
Option "DPMS"
EndSection

& got rid of the spaces on the HorizSync & VertRefresh (the spaces before & after the hyphen) & now it loads x.

odd...
