The xorg.conf-vesa is just an example file. It does not have any effect on your setup.
You can check what the X autodetection routines are setting by executing, as root, "X -configure". If those settings are OK, then you have no need for an xorg.conf at all.

Well, I think I spoke too soon. I booted up today and It booted into 1024x768 and then had to log out of the user I was in

to do something and when I logged back in it was at 1920x1080. (That is the setting that my monitor is set at and recommends)

At least I am not in 640x480 anymore LOL, and I have all the different graphics options in the xfce display settings to

adjust.

Do I need to exit out of X to run X -configure? because I get:

Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
if this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
and start again.

THANKS

instead messing with xrandir and similar "detects hardware well malfunctions", use /etc/X11/xorg.conf file for setting modelines for your display under MONITOR section see example>

Section "Monitor"
Modeline "1152x865@85" 133.01 1152 1184 1688 1720 865 881 893 909
Modeline "1152x865@84" 130.80 1152 1184 1680 1712 865 881 893 909
Modeline "1152x865@75" 111.89 1152 1184 1608 1640 865 881 892 909
Modeline "1024x768@75" 85.52 1024 1056 1376 1408 768 782 792 807
Modeline "1024x768@85" 100.94 1024 1056 1432 1464 768 782 793 807
Modeline "1024x768@100" 126.64 1024 1056 1536 1568 768 781 794 807
Identifier "Monitor0"

NB, those modelines are valid for my monitor, not yours.

that does not matter, what driver you use, vesa, nv, nouveau or proprietary, they are all capable using modeline-s.
but only with one driver, you will have PERFOMANCE with your GF3 card, is NVIDIA proprietary. and you will need legacy 96xx drivers and KMS parts for it, and they are not compatible with new xorg updates, so you have to stick with em, unless you do not want to reconfigure nvidia support again after xorg update.

in very short, nouveau suck at glx and flash perfomance. vesa and nv modules do not have glx support at all.

valid modelines can be generated by modeline configurator, available online from web. with older CRT-s use with extreme caution, because you can really broke your monitor if exceeding valid refresh rates.

I tried X -configure and this is what I got:

Failed to load "xgi" invalid module using conf file /root/xorg.conf.new
No Dricreatepcibusid symbol
Number of created screens does not match number of detected devices.
Configuration failed.

Is this why my resolution keeps changing everytime I restart the computer?
If I install the Nvidia drivers will that stop the resolution from changing when i boot?

Those messages suggest that X is failing to detect your graphics setup.
My strong suggestion is to try the nVidia driver.

If you want to persist with the nouveau driver, please post the output of 'lspci' and the contents of /var/log/Xorg.0.log after starting X without a /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.

I dont really care if I use the nouveau or not, I dont know what it is to begin with. With slack 1337 its the first time Ive

heard of it.

The Xorg.0.log has a whole bunch of nouveau lines in it and is too big to post here.

lspci gives this:

00:00.0 Host bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 655 Host (rev 50)
00:01.0 PCI bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] SiS AGP Port (virtual PCI-to-PCI bridge)
00:02.0 ISA bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] SiS964 [MuTIOL Media IO] (rev 36)
00:02.5 IDE interface: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 5513 [IDE] (rev 01)
00:03.0 USB Controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] USB 1.1 Controller (rev 0f)
00:03.1 USB Controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] USB 1.1 Controller (rev 0f)
00:03.2 USB Controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] USB 1.1 Controller (rev 0f)
00:03.3 USB Controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] USB 2.0 Controller
00:04.0 Ethernet controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] SiS900 PCI Fast Ethernet (rev 91)
00:0b.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB Live! EMU10k1 (rev 07)
00:0b.1 Input device controller: Creative Labs SB Live! Game Port (rev 07)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV20 [GeForce3] (rev a3)

The 'lspci' output gives the PCI bus address of your graphics.

It may be large, but it will have the information needed to suggest xorg.conf settings, such as details of monitor mode timings being detected and display names.

I tried to post it and its too big, I get a message to shorten it to about half of the size it is.

If I install the Nvidia drivers will that overide the nouveau driver?
And will that stop the massivea amount of lines that scroll by when i boot up that say nouveau ? LOL

When you install the nVidia driver, it will blacklist loading the nouveau kernel module. i,e. the nouveau driver will be overridden.

I have not seen excessive messages when using nVidia drivers,

OK, thanks. I am going to try and install the Nvidia drivers when I get a chance.
