X problems

I now have X running with gdm at boot, but whenever I try to log in as a user it says something like "This user has been logged in for less than ten seconds" or something of that sort. What's going on with that?

Your window manager (or some related program) is probably crashing. If the window manager crashes and you get dumped back to the gdm login screen, it prints a message to let you know that something went wrong. Look in the .xsession-errors file in your home directory to find the problem (as the error message says).
