As of wine-9.0, you need to set a configure option at build time to enable the 'new WoW64 mode' which doesn't need 32-bit libraries. Most Wine packages probably won't have this set.

Since AlienBob's wine packages have always worked for me, I decided to compile the latest stable (wine-9.0), using his buildscript and including latest gecko, mono, and staging. Took 1 hr 15 mins on my HP laptop with intel core i7-4510U processor. The very few programs (32 and 64 bit) I run under wine (I'm not a gamer) runs without glitches.

Same here, I always just use Alien Bob's SlackBuild for wine and just version bump and modify a few things as needed. The only thing about his script I permanently change is his winecfg logo. It's a weird looking svg with a bunch russian nesting doll looking wine glasses, it doesn't work for me, so I created my own in coreldraw and replaced it with that.
WoW64 is a means by which 32-bit programs are run in 64-bit space. Not WoW, the game. (Easy to mistake...I read one for the other every time I see the term.)
WoW64 means Windows on Windows 64-bit. A method used by MS Windows to run 32-bit programs in 64-bit. In Wine, it requires 32-bit version of wine to run 32-bit windows programs on 64-bit. On wine 9.0 or later release, it can run 32-bit windows in all 64-bit wine without relying on 32-bit wine.

OK, thanks, sorry for being ignorant. No, haven't tried WoW64. AlienBob's wine package is/was built to handle 32bit programs provided you have a multilib setup (that's the reason why I went multilib with my first 64bit machine). Since it works, I haven't had a reason to try somenthing else.
But an interesting novelty and maybe I'll check it out in the future.

Just upgraded to wine 9.0-2 from slackbuilds.org, from wine 9.0. Running Slackware 15 64-bit multilib.
I have two different prefixes, one for 32-bit and one for 64-bit. With the previous wine 9.0 version, I had no problem using either. With the new one, only the 64-bit prefix works. Trying to run anything from the 32-bit prefix returns this:
Code:
wine: '<prefix>' is a 32-bit installation, it cannot support 64-bit applications.
Obviously, the new slackbuild enabled WoW64. Is there a way to disable WoW64 in run time? I don't like the idea of re-installing the 32-bit windows apps. Otherwise, I suppose that I will have to recompile wine.

Reason: More setup details.
