You don't want to download lots of software, eh?
Then SuSE might be good for you: It's a double-sided DVD filled with lots and lots of stuff...!

But no: I don't want to distract anyone from Slackware, whick I use and like, just as well!

IMHO, great as slack is it's far from standard and I have had nothing but compatibility issues with it and any other distribution. Heck if VIM don;t even work then it definately has issues.
Simple:
Code:
cp /usr/share/vim/vim63/vimrc_example.vim ~/.vimrc

In Slackware, 'vi' calls elvis. There was a post recently that had some good examples for vim configuration.

Just noticed that your GUI tool for swaret is available as .tar.bz2 only. There's no Slackware package (.tgz).
Is there a particular reason for this?

I have tried a couple of distros, I have been in the Linux world on and off for about 5 years. I'm starting to feel really good in the Linux world because I 'm starting to understand alot more thing that I used to. I've tried SuSE, Mandrake, Debian, Redhat and Redhat Fedora and now I'm using slackware since last mounth.

The one thing I'd like to mention about it is that it is by far, in my opinion, the best distro I've tried. It is true that it is not perfect out of the box. I had to search on the net to get my scroll mouse to work and to get my X config file setted the right way but I enjoyed it very much and I found that the way Slackware is designed helped me very much because of it's simple config logic. All other more "User friendly distros" I've tried are by far more complicated when it comes to tweaking and understanding what is happening under the hood.

I enjoy very much getting my hands dirty and slackware is very good at letting me do it.

So great thanks to the slackware team for their great work and great distro.

The obligatory slackware zealot post:

Well, slackware is the only distro I have tried so far that has absolutely zero problems whatsoever. Itīs rock solid, I like the simplistic package management. Itīs very source friendly especially with checkinstall. And the user community is absolutely great, Iīve gotten an answer to every problem Iīve had from this forum. Compared to graphical distros like mandrake/suse/fedora itīs also very fast.

What makes Slackware Unique?

Well it's got to be the only mainstream distro with a website that's two years out of date :-)

Seriously though, all of the above. The community here is excellent.
