Deactivating the keyboard-layouts and xkb-options in kde-settings did it here. Now ctrl+alt+F6 works.
So, that begs the question what file(s) edits take place as a result of those actions?
/me heads back to Google
Both of those options were disabled in the KDE settings. Running Kcontrol as root and enabling the keyboard layout throws this error: Error loading new keyboard description
Googling that gives me about a million things to chase, but all relate to the same area.
I have Slackware 12 running fine, can switch terminals with Fn without problems at all. With or without X running (XFCE desktop). Keyboard layout is fi/105key, not using console framebuffer if somebody is interested. Custom-built kernel for that purpose, but mainly the same config as with the huge 2.6 that is the default one..
EDIT: using 'sis' driver in xorg.conf, that's what the laptop's inbuilt video chip is. No hopes of 3d, but it does work, and composite extension works without problems
Error message about keymap loading and output of setxkbmap (symbols in pc subdirectory) signalize some kind of screwed up installation - it looks like you are mixing xorg files of new 7.2 version with some of the previous one. What are you doing with backing up/restoring of xkb directory ? I see no reason to fiddle with it in general.
I would suggest to reinstall at least xorg-server and xkeyboard-config packages coming with Slackware 12.0, better all packages from 'x' series. I hope you know about upgradepkg and its --reinstall option. Restart and check Xorg.0.log and let us know if it did helped.
The upgrade process created the backup xkb dir as noted in the upgrade document (which I followed precisely). I tried to repopulate the new one since it was a. empty and b. not working. The file you suggested I patch, for example, did not exist in the normal spot.
I do know about the upgradepkg --reinstall - that's what I did to ensure that the xkb and libxkb packages were correctly installed.
Edit:
Fixed. I reinstalled these all in one shot, so I can't say which thing did it, nor explain why - a bad read from the DVD the first time? a typo on my part? (although I stepped through the history and found no errors)
Reinstalled xkeyboard-config, x11*., xorg.*
Thanks again, all, especially dunric.
I thought that I'd tried reinstalling the xkeyboard-config package, but I can't prove it by my bash history. I'll try that, the X packages and report back.
