What do you use to monitor server activity?

Hi

I am getting to know Slack at the moment. I would like to install it on a server [currently win32 Apache2,php,mysql,Perl].
What do you use to monitor the server activities?

By monitoring I mean something similar to Commview or Iris.

I would like to monitor port activities, transfer and conections.
I would be running httpd, protftpd and maybe a mailserver.
It does not matter if it is CLI or GUI.

Cheers

activities and conections are all logged by they're respective servers. Transfer in some cases as well.

Tnx for the help.

I have read about tail -f after you mentioned it.

It is quite useful to check on logs but it does not consolidate the info.

Info that I am after are IPs, Ports, services, packets etc

I will have to do some reading about iptraf now.

Many thnaks.

Well if you want the ultimate in customized monitoring you could write a bash script or two that would take care of all that for you... something that monitored log files for unauthorized usage or something of the sort. Odd things occuring, large changes in processor usage or disk space, odd network usage... things like that. That however requires a working knowlegde of BASH and possibly sed and awk and other various tools. If you're looking for something commercial so to speak check out freshmeat and search for what exactly you're looking for.
