Webcam Video Capture App?

Anyone know of an application that will record video from a (USB) webcam?

I looked at Kino but, it doesn't seem to work on a webcam...

Well,

There are several.

For starters, have you searched your distribution's package manager for possible applications? I personally use "Cheese" for GNOME, and I like the way it works. Other options might include XAWTV, VLC, LUVCVIEW, Ekiga.... it all depends on what exactly you want to do, and to a small extent what type of webcam you have.

Also take a look at http://www.linux.com/base/ldp/howto/...bbers.html#GUI

And as always, Google is your friend.

What I want to do is: use my existing webcam to make videos (yes, I know it's low quality). I don't want to have to go out and buy a digital camera.

What I don't want is single frame captures or screen captures.

My webcam: Creative VF-0050 (I have the linux driver working).

hi,

try spcaview (http://mxhaard.free.fr/), I used it with my camera BENQ DC1300 smoothly. Look at this howto (section 2.4): http://mxhaard.free.fr/sview.html ...

This is one of the areas that I think Linux apps are still lacking in. So far I've found nothing that's a patch on the Quickcam software for windows. I'm sure cheese will improve, but when I tried it a few months back it did nothing but crash on me. And also, its a gnome app, so us non gnome users are still left doing it the hard way with command line utilities that don't give a preview panel or any onscreen controls.

I had some success with mencoder when I tried playing around with this stuff. It also did a good job of capturing sound and keeping it in sync which I found was a problem for some of the others, which either had sync issues, or didn't do sound at all.

In the end though I decided it was just too much hard work and went back to windows for video work. Hopefully, this will change in future, but for now, linux is still playing catchup in this area.
