Vi problem - unsupported protocol dir
Just noticed this problem. When I start vi (not vim) "unsupported protocol dir" is displayed 4 or 5 times in terminal.
Googling didn't bring any results.
Any ideas?

Same old, same old. If there's something unexplained, use strace. :}
strace -tfF -o vi.log vi
Let the error happen and quite of vi. Check the freshly produced log
in the hopes that you can see at which stage that error appears.
Cheers,
Tink

I can't really see anything
Code:
13431 01:00:01 stat64("/home/dive/.elvis/elvis.net", 0xbfeca860) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
13431 01:00:01 stat64("/etc/elvis/elvis.net", 0xbfeca860) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
13431 01:00:01 stat64("/usr/share/elvis-2.2_0/elvis.net", 0xbfeca860) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
13431 01:00:01 stat64("/usr/share/elvis-2.2_0/doc/elvis.net", 0xbfeca860) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
13431 01:00:01 write(2, "unsupported protocol dir\n", 25) = 25
As far as I know I've never had an elvis.net file and it's only used for proxy info.
I've tried renaming /usr/share/elvis-2.2_0 and all config files in HOME
Same problem. Looking at the source it looks like it's being given dir as a net protocol similar to 'vi
http://. ..' but I can't see where that is coming from. Even if I use http protocol I'm still getting the 'dir' error.
It also says 'skipping 2 old session files' but I can't find any using locate or find. I can still edit files but it's just plain annoying. Slackware has been using the same version elvis since at least as way back as 10.1 so I can only think it's a config file somewhere...

Which files *is* vi finding, rather than getting ENOENTs?
Cheers,

After moving/renaming /usr/share/elvis-2.2_0 and any config files in home, and deleting old session files, I now get the error once and only when starting vi with a file name. Just running vi without a file no longer gives the error. I can't see any files being found in vi.log at all:

Hmmm .... I didn't see anything odd or untoward. Two things you could do:
a) contact the maintainer of elvis and ask or look at the source for dir & protocol
b) symlink vim to vi and hope it behaves itself better than elvis ;}
Cheers,
Tink

Yeah I've no problem with vim and I had a quick look at the source. At least now the error only shows once since I found and deleted the session files.
