I'm using Slackware 10 with kernel 2.6.7. After installing bootsplash-3.1 I'm getting an error on bootup that looks like this:
vfs unable to mount root fs on hda/3
kernel panic: ramdisk: couldnt find valid ram disk image starting at 0
once the error happens the boot up freezes and i have to use the rescue disk to boot up.
I am trying to get the bootsplash to work in slackware and here is what ive done.
1. downloaded and installed kernel patch for the bootsplash to work: no errors on patch.
2. configured and recompiled kernel as per the instructions in the bootsplash-3.1.tgz package. no errors on compile.
3. configured the rc.d files as per the instructions and like the examples.
4. configured lilo as advised.
5. ran splash from the command line to make initrd.
6. confirmed initrd was made in /boot directory.
7. made sure the initrd was made correctly as per the manual.(when i opened up the file there was just a bunch of gibberish there)
8. ran /sbin/lilo
9. rebooted.
The system then boots up and the slackware bootsplash starts up, after five seconds the silent screen changes to verbose and i get the error stated at the beginning of the post. When i boot the system with the boot disk and change lilo back to the old initrd.gz file instead of the initrd made by the splash utility everything boots up fine but with no bootsplash. i have a suspicion that the splash utility isnt making a valid initrd but have no idea how to correct or troubleshoot this. Thanks for reading through my long post.
