USB Joystick on Slack 8.1....

Hi all.
I just trie out the old Slack 8.1.
Iwas impressed being a user of Slack since 9.0, i had put my hand on this old pearl...
To be honest this version really makes me going, but im having some troubles.
First some of my specs:

- Asus A7V333 ( i know that kernel 2.4.18, dont enables DMA in my south bridge, but i really dont care.)
- AMD XP 2000+
- 3DFX Voodoo 5 5500 AGP(i only wich that Linus support was soo good as Windows is, even with 3D party drivers....)
- CH-Products Combastick 586 USB
- Slack 8.1 (All updates included)
- Kernel 2.4.18(default)
- Pinnacle PCTV Pro

I have no major problems that i cant solve, even my image quality from my tv-card is superb, better them in any new slack version...
Has almoast everyone of you knows my board have USB 2.0, and nomather what i doo, i cant make my joystick work...
I can live with some minor problems like no DMA support(if anyone knows of a patch for 2.4.18 kernel, i will be glad to have DMA...), but i really make use of my joystick, so if anyone can help me with this i will apreciate it....
Thanks.

P.S.: Portugal is in the Euro final

Update to the latest kernel for the hardware support you need - not to mention several security fixes that you should have.

Well thatīs a good idea, but does Slack 8.1 supports the latest kernel 2.6.x?
Iīm not sure of that.
Sorry about my ignorance...
Thanks.

No, Slackware is from version 9.1 2.6 kernel compatible. Slackware 10 has better support for a 2.6 kernel. You will have to update several programs to make a 2.6 kernel work on a Slack 8.1 installation. BTW, the 2.4.18 kernel is patched for known vulnerabilities, so if you're up to date security is not an issue, since Slackware 8.1 is (was since 10 was released ?) still supported. I would use a 2.4.26 (with patches for the latest local security issue) .

Thanks for the tip rotvogel...
Iīm a user how dosent like many unnecesary software installed, thatīs why i love slack, and i like to keep all clean and prety....
So what i did was, clean install of Slack 8.1.
After that i switch to run level 1 (telinit 1)and unistall all the kernel 2.4.18 related.
$ /sbin/removepkg kernel-ide-2.4.18-i386-3
$ /sbin/removepkg kernel-headers-2.4.18-i386-3
$ /sbin/removepkg kernel-modules-2.4.18-i386-4
$ /sbin/removepkg kernel-source-2.4.18-noarch-4
Installed all kernel related from slack 10.0 (2.4.26).
$ /sbin/installpkg kernel-ide-2.4.26-i486-4
$ /sbin/installpkg kernel-ide-2.4.26-i486-4
$ /sbin/installpkg kernel-modules-2.4.26-i486-3
$ /sbin/installpkg kernel-source-2.4.26-noarch-4
Reinstalled lilo
$ /sbin/lilo
Switch to runlevel 3 (telinit 3)
Rebooted
All whent fine with no problems, i was already happy.
Now switched to runlevel 1 again (telinit 1), installed all slack 8.1 updates, of course itīs to long to enumerate, but here is an example:
$ /sbin/upgradepkg apache-1.3.31-i386-1.tgz
....
Switch again to runlevel 3 (telinit 3)
Edict /etc/rc.d/rc.modules
Rebooted again.
All worked just like a champ, man my system is so fast now that i cant believe my eyes....
Mutch more faster then any other Slack version...
And more important all works and i have a dream box now....
With a litle patient and your tip it was easy, slack for live...
Thanks
