Upgrading KDE

I want to upgrade from KDE 3.1.0 to 3.1.1.
I tried downloading the 18 packages on http://www.linuxpackages.net/details.php?name=kde
and installing them.
When I restarted kde, I had the following message
Quote:
could not start kdeinit
and then a pop up stating
Quote:
Could not read network connection list
/root/.DCOPserver
Please check that the dcopserver program is running
Obviously the update didn't work and broke kde.
I have reinstalled kde from the disk.

What now?
What do I need to do to upgrade kde?
Help much appreciated...
Thanks.

I'd suggesting reading the installation documentation on on the KDE website. << HERE >> There might be some pre-/post-install steps you need to do.

hrmm...

! sorry, didn't realize this was the slack board !

I don't think you need all 18 packages...but perhaps you do.

I would recommend doing a minimum install so you may be able to figure out where the problem is occurring. I'm not completely sure how the install process is in slack, but at least for redhat it was a minimum of about 4 packages if I remember correctly. I had problems the first time I tried it too.

there are kde packages for slackware at www.kde.org &
www.linuxpackages.net

The uppgrade has always worked for me (the new version could have problems with old settings )

1: exit X
2: logg in as root or su, run pkgtool
3: remove old kdepackages & qt
4: install the new kde packages
5: hold your breath and enter: startx . . .

Cheers. Will try again, removing all the packages first before installing the new ones..

Just an update for whoever is interested.
I downloaded all the packages from kde.org: here

Then installed them and everything worked staight away.

Can only assume that the packages from www.linuxpackages.net weren't enough or not working..

I had the same problem with KDE packages from linuxpackages. This set is incomplete. It looks like one should be very carefull with any packages from this source, it is always better idea to use sources approved on official site of given application.

Definetly, however, most applications haven't got Slackware packages to offer. Not that I mind compiling from the source but still, it is better to be able to use a package..
