Upgrading and Patching: Packages or Source ??

Recently i had to apply some more patches(OpenSSL).I wonder which is the better way to apply patches and upgrade your system instead of waiting for the next release of slackware.I mean that using precompiled binaries, may won't work in some cases(mostly when they are drivers etc) and this thing with sources is a mess because when you have packages u just use pkgtool to know what you have and do modification on them(addpkg, upgradepkg etc..).But when you upgrade via source you don't know what you have! And what if you want to unistall it ??oh.. But if u use source code you are faster i believe. On the other hand there are some tools that allow you to upgrade packages from Internet so that u don't have to go through the packages one by one to find out those that need upgrade...

Is there any solution in the middle or something else that could solve those difficulties ???

I mean what would be better than to have a tool that upgrades from the internet, that uses source code and makes a list like pkgtool !!

Use checkinstall to build your own packages from source.

I think you might mean something like checkinstall. You use it with the source code. Do your normal ./configure (with whatever flags you want, make and then instead of make install you type checkinstall. This will install the package the same as a slackware package. That way it shows up in the pkgtool database. You can remove the old one with removepkg.
