Ugly fonts after 10.0 to 10.1 upgrade

I just finished upgrading my 10.0 slack to 10.1 following the instructions in UPGRADE.TXT. After doing so an rebooting, and restarting my VNCServer session, the fonts have noticably degraded.

I am using TightVNC for VNC

My current font path: (xorg.conf)
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/"
#FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/:unscaled"
#FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/:unscaled"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/local/"
#FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/cyrillic/"

I just commented the ones that are commented out. There was not change. This is a VM (VMWare 4.5) slack installation, but since I am running VNC I don't think that should make a difference.

The new fonts are more "boxy" and their outlines are not smooth at all (can see jagged pixel lines in diagonal fonts for example). During the upgrade I saw the fonts package was updated, so have a feeling that was it.

Anyone else have this problem and have a solution? (I'm not much of an X11 user, so if you could reference instructions if there are any font installations needed I would appreciate it as well).

Well, got this mostly fixed. Now my fonts look better than they did in 10.0. The biggest problem was font anti-aliasing (or lack there of).

First, I installed the windows fonts (just copied the TTF files from a windows box to a common location on my slack box) on my Linux box using the KDE font installer (in the control center).

This didn't seem to help, or at least not that much. So, I kept looking. I finally found this article:

Now my fonts are looking quite nice. There is some odd looking features to some of the fonts. Like 'k' and '2' and other such items with diagonal lines. Sometimes the diagonal like is faded (can barely see it). This may be due to the fact that I am not using the recommended exclude range. This is because at 14/15, almost everything seemed to be excluded, and I was getting horrid fonts everywhere.

The thing which I do is not to use any exclusion ranges at all otherwise most of the fonts in kde will be jagged.
