udev hotplug 2.6 /extra kernel Slackware 11.0

Hi.

Are we supposed to be using either udev or hotplug?

I thought I saw something (changelog or etc.) somewhere to that effect.

Mine Slack 11 is running both Udev or AutoDev or whatever it's called and also is running hotplug.

Well you can run both. Usually you don't need hotplug with 2.6.x kernels, so you can try making /etc/rc.d/rc.hotplug not executable

Code:
chmod a-x /etc/rc.d/rc.hotplug

I made rc.hotplug not executable. Restarted computer since then. All works fine. Therefore, I must not need hotplug here. Thanks.

root@p3srv:/etc/rc.d# pwd
/etc/rc.d

root@p3srv:/etc/rc.d# chmod -x rc.hotplug

root@p3srv:/etc/rc.d# lsag hotplug
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2243 2006-09-20 16:50 rc.hotplug
root@p3srv:/etc/rc.d#

root@p3srv:/etc/rc.d# cat ~/.bashrc
# <snip>
alias lsag='ls -la | grep'
alias lsg='ls | grep'

hotplug is only used on 2.4 kernels, udev is used for 2.6. As Slackware 11 is still shipping with both 2.4 and 2.6, both are included. The system will only use whatever is appropriate for your kernel, by checking the running version during bootup.

In any event, Slackware will no longer include a 2.4 kernel from this point on, so you might as well just ignore hotplug anyway; it is a thing of the past.
