I also am curious about television capture under linux. I guess I am also asking something vauge.
Ok. What I want to do is record something from the output of my vcr onto mysomcuter. I would need to chisel the file down to the size of just the eposode I am recording. Then, I should like to record dvd of several maybe 3 episodes.
1. What is the best, most generic card to use under mandriva 2205 0r 2006?
2. What program is most likely to be easy to learn to use?
3. Does it record to mpeg2 format, or is conversion necessary?
There are a ton of options out there.
You can look Here for some info on v4l which is the standard linux kernel module. I think this site is really old though so you should probably gogle V4l or Video for Linux for better info.
The IVTV Project supports a line of cards that has mpeg encoders on the chip.
