If you want Gnome I would suggest installing Dropline.
Don't let it get you down if its taking a few installs to get things right; most of us have learned the same way.

Your posts remind me of a person I heard about in Hägersten...

well, never mind (that's off-topic)

You have tried many distros. Distros har du provat många :-D

Why not try a new window environment? Sorry if you have tried this already. But fluxbox and icewm are usually so light, they're in many Slack distros.

I mean Gnome and KDE are heavy. You get more things done via Command line and light WMs ....

I would give Freerock Gnome a try. I have it running on 10.2 right now.

http://gsb.freerock.org/

I am close to your age. Just keep hanging in there. You will get there.

I'm also very close to your age:-) It is good to meet another Slacker who was born in the 50s! I've been using Slack since 10.0 and love it. XFce works for me.
You've installed gentoo, I haven't done that yet. I have much to learn.

While there are some problems with Dropline Gnome 2.10.2 and Slackware 10.2 they aren't unsurmountable. However, DLG 2.10.2 is only supported on Slackware 10.1. We should be releasing a beta of Dropline Gnome 2.12.0 in the next few days and when we do I would suggest giving that a go. I'm running the "alpha" now and it is "nice".

Freerock/GSB is another good Gnome desktop that was suggested and they have a 2.12.0 available for testing now as well.

BTW, I'm nearly 50 so we're pretty close in age. As the others have said, hang in there and ask for help when you need it.

Later,
MMYoung

Sorry that Dropline GNOME 2.10.2 didn't work for you. As MMYoung said, 2.10.2 was intended for Slackware 10.1. It should work, but there are a few changes between Slackware 10.1 and 10.2 that may cause some small issues. That's why we require that users add "--force" to the line when executing the installer on Slackware versions othr than it was built upon.

As MMYoung also mentioned, Freerock GNOME is quite nice, and they released a GNOME 2.12.0 desktop for Slackware 10.2 a few days ago. We'll also be releasing a 2.12.0 beta in a few days (for Slackware 10.2), but we still want to iron out a few small details before we publicly announce it.

Absolutely! Installing, configuring, testing.....then breaking, and re-installing your OS is a time-honored self-teaching method! Most people who are truly competent have done this sort of thing many, many a time. Back in the day, I had to install MSDOS 4.x (and later, Windows 286) quite a few times when I was first learning about these computer thingies. I have broken more Windows95 installations than I can possibly count. And, let's not even get into routers and other stuff...

We were probably going to remove Dia in Dropline GNOME 2.12.0, but we'll keep it in since someone apparently uses it.

The 2.12.0 beta is about a day away. It's largely finished, but we have just a few small issue to take care of.
