Hi,

You are probably referring to the BSD fortunes.

Have you installed the /y/ package category ?

If not, install the bsd-games package with slackpkg.

Then make it executable so it will be displayed when you log in :

Code:
# chmod +x /etc/profile.d/bsd-games-login-fortune.*
Reboot and log back in as root.

Hope it helps.

You're talking about "fortune cookies"... The program is simply "fortune".

Try this:
Code:
 $ fortune
BTW I haven't checked but it might be called in a "bash.profile"-something on the system. If you want it back check for that.

Also there are difference between "login shell" and simple "interactive shell" in the init scripts.

I think you mean the `fortune` programme.

I believe it still runs by default at login on Slackware, but it runs from ~/.bashrc, or from ~/.bash_profile, or from somewhere.

Looks like it's currently in /etc/profile.d/bsd-games-login-fortune.sh, and will only run on login shells from there. Do you have that file? In not you can add `fortune` to the end of your .bashrc, or .profile

It shouldn't be gone. That's the "fortune" program, that displays these so-called "quote of the day

You should see one every time you log in at runlevel 3 (in a console) or do a full login (su - [user]) in a terminal under X, but not if you just change the user (e.g. su [user]).

If you don't get it then you have probably changed some configuration file.

PS there can be silly answers, but there are no silly questions.

PPS Too late.

Useless funny side note: Sony can be pleased with that, but it's PPS (post-post-scriptum) and not PlayStation 2 .

Cheers.
