Slackware is the best linux distribution out there. Anybody disagree?
I started with Lycoris, went to Mandrake 8, then Redhat 7.2, then Redhat 8, now I've been with Slack since January. Started with 8.1, now on 9. I've learned more in the past 3 months on Slackware than I learned in 10 on those other distros.
ive been on for 4 days and i think ive learned alot for never touching any OS except windows! and its all thanks to linuxquestions.org
shot out to excalibur and aussie for all the help!!!
i started out with red hat 7.2 (awful experience, deleted it after 2 days), then mandrake 9.0 (which was excellent), and now i have slackware 9.0, which is the best disrtro i've used so far.
i only wish it included OpenOffice.org, Ximian Evolution, and games like Tux Racer and Frozen Bubble, but i understand that it probably wouldn't fit in the cd. but why did they include both Mozilla AND Netscape? it seems a little redundant
I agree totally. I started out with RH 7 and then 8. Switched to slack because everyone told me that I wouldn't be able to do it Now, after about 1 month I would never go back. Shenlong -- if you get Gnome Dropline I believe you can compile Evolution 1.3.1.
Quoting shenlong
but why did they include both Mozilla AND Netscape? it seems a little redundant
Hmm ... I personally like Mozilla better, and that's
the browser I use by default (opera is neat, but doesn't
work for a bunch of pages, and I don't like the adds :})
but for a special web-based inhouse application I need Netscape (for some reason I can't understand)
because Mozilla fails to work with that one :/
I bought SuSE 7.1 without knowing a thing about linux. After it giving me nothing but headaches, a guy I met on IRC recomended Slackware, and even snail mailed 8.1 to me! (I', on dial up) I haven't looked back since. I purchased 9.0 from slack store. I have tried other distro's, but Slack is the only distro on my main puter
I got a bad case of the FUBG's last night (that is F.You Bill Gates) and got a slack 9 disk from someone. Install went flawlessly, except the mouse-wheel-thingy, and I can live without that for a while. Now I just need to learn how to use it and keep people out. I have heard nightmare stories about linux, especially slackware, so never tried....Too bad I waited sooo long!! Luv it.
I've used quite a few distros: Redhat 5.1 was my first. Scary. Then I tried RedHat 7.2 later. Then I got a taste of Mandrake 8.2. That was nice. Then 9.0. Very nice. I tried some other stuff over time: Debian 3, FreeBSD, neither of which are really all linux.. neither stuck.. neither really installed.. I am most comfortable with Mandrake. I DID try RedHat 9.0 last week. I thought maybe thy got it together, but they didn't. I had alot of lockups with that puppy. Looked nice, but didn't work well. But I am hearing nice things about slackware, so thats what I have downloading now. Let's hope I like it as much as you all do. I want a nice simple, clean, efficient system, so I think this is the right choice.
As for the Netscape and Mozilla thing, I don't see the logic since they are nearly identical. If we are being purists, which I think we are if the vote is for slack, then why not go pure and use only mozilla? Netscape is a waste of space next to Mozilla.
I've been trying Linux off and on since the mid 90's but I didn't really have a machine with enough HD for a useable Linux until 1999. I went through a number of distros - RedHat, Mandrake SuSe, Debian, FreeBSD. All of them were kewl, but there was always something that didn't work right. Then I stumbled on Slackware 7.0. Though I had some hassles, I got the important stuff working under Slack and it's always been more reliable than any other distro I've tried.
So far, the only problems Slack have given me are 1. my WUSB11 v.2.6 -- which I couldnt get to work under RH8, but did under Slack 8.1 and then 9. and 2. my sound card, which I also got working fairly simply. I love Slack
I started a long time ago on whatever Slackware was around in early 1997. It went teribly wrong, eg I ended up mangling my windows partition, deleting everything. This was my first experience of linux and it didn't go well.
I moved on later to Redhat 5.0, better at the time, less destructive and slightly more knowledgable...
Then Redhat 6.0, 7.2 and feeling quite happy I didn't feel it was any match for Win 98.
I moved onto Mandrake 8.0, 8.1 which I liked but got fed up because all the other distros seem to have newer things.
I jumped to Redhat 8.0, which is OK, but I got fed up with not knowing how to do anything outside of the GUI tools...
Which is when I thought back to Slackware... I have been hearing great things about how good Slackware 9.0 is going to be, so I thought I would go for it...
I downloaded installed, have had problems but I am really happy with it at the moment. I can burn CD's (cdrecord/k3b), play DVD's (MPlayer) edit photos, create/test web pages, do my Java developement (Blackdown), and browse the web...
Thanks, all, for the help with my mouse-wheel-thingy (pardon the technical talk please). It works! Now on to bigger and better things, like figuring out what I am doing besides surfing around.
