Start simultaneous TWM and XFCE sessions

I always boot into an init3 command prompt.

My main environment is TWM. I have various xinitrc files starting different programs on login (mainly cli stuff in xterms), all aliased in .bashrc so I can choose the one I want. I can start TWM, then if I want to I can start a second session by hitting Ctrl-Alt-F2, login in then startx in to another TWM session. The two sessions are then both available via Ctrl-Alt-F7 and Ctrl-Alt-F8.

What I would like to do though is run an XFCE session alongside the TWM sessions but I'm not sure how. If I switch to the new login and run startxfce4 I just get an error message. I took a photo of it and attached it here.

Is it possible to run multiple sessions of different environments?

On tty2, you can do this:

startxfce4 -- :2 vt2

Use, :3 vt3,:4 vt4,... etc. depending on which virtual console you want it to start on.

This is the way to do it. Virtual displays are numbered 0 to 5 and accessed by F7-F12.

Display 0 would be your normal ctrl+alt+F7 (when you normally startx)

For a virtual display on, ctrl+alt+F8
Code:
startxfce4 -- :1
For a virtual display on, ctrl+alt+F9
Code:
startxfce4 -- :2
etc.

I reconfigured mine so that the X display on vt7 is :7 rather than the more usual :0. It reminds me where I am.

Or type startx on tty1, Ctrl+Alt+F2, login, change the default session and type startx again.

Thanks to you all for your solutions and the further reading, so simple when you know how

Slackware is just so great and much of that is down to the community in here.

Thanks again!
