sound not working without panel

I use fluxbox.
The sound doesn't work when i boot into fluxbox right after a restar. So when i checked GNOME, it works. And if i go into flux after GNOME, it still works.

I had a feeling it had something to do with the fact that the volume in the gnome panel starts out down, so i have to turn it up.

So in fluxbox, if i run gnome-panel
Suddenly the sound works.

Now, this really is no big deal, but it is silly to start and close gnome-panel every time I have to restart.

Any way to fix this?
thanks

If you use ALSA, try using alsamixer. Currently I have to call it every time after I reboot. I'm gonna put alsactl restore somewhere in rc.local or something.

You can have a mixer set volumes at startup, not sure what you can use for OSS but with alsa use amixer e.g.
amixer set Master 80% unmute
