Angry sound conf is gone on logout|login

Hi

I am running Slax and every time I logout as a non-root user all of the mods/permissions I have made to /dev/cdrom, /dev/hdb, and /dev/snd is gone! I have to spend literally hours reconf everything to play a damn cd again!

Let me say that I love using Slax Linux on my computers BUT... does anyone HONESTLY believe the average user is going to spend HOURS learning how to chmod 777 his sound&audio, nano /etc/fstab, change groups, alsaconf, logout and login to play a **damn music cd???

Maybe they would have in 1991, people just expect this stuff to "just work" these days. There's good reason why by default all users shouldn't have access to /dev/cdrom.... but sound and alsamixer??? I mean come on!!

Hi and welcome to LQ.

I've moved this thread to the Slackware forum because chances of you getting help are probably higher there. In other distros you do not have to do the things you mentioned above in order to play audio discs, so your "problem" is no longer common in Linux because things are just automatically configured.

Which groups are you a member of?

Type this:

groups

as a normal user. If you're not in cdrom and audio then add yourself to them.

Welcome to LQ, indeed!

Can you please confirm you mean Slax? If yes, where is it being run from? Live CD, USB, harddisk, etc?

Also, fwiw, I second simcox1's recommendations. You can find out more about user groups and so on from http://www.slackbook.org/ , if you've not already visited there.

Let us know how you get on.

If this was slackware I'd tell you to save your sound configuration by running the following commands at a root shell prompt.

#alsaconf

#alsamixer

#alsactl store

Also add your regular user to plugdev, cdrom, audio, video.
I know slax is based on slackware, that might work. Is there a slax forum where you can get help? Good luck with this:-)

I think it was probably a groups issue

I did have the Back|Track/Slax installed to HD. All of my mucking about with chmod's as root and I somehow messed my Lilo up so now I have to re-install Lilo. I can only access things on my HD right now thru my live-cd's...

Just boot from live cd and rerun lilo. Add permissions in fstab.

yeah I tried that and I get a "read only" error from lilo. Looks like somehow my NTFS partition (/dev/hda1) overwrote the MBR.. What now, any ideas???

Did you mount your linux partition? Then you could chroot into it. Don't remember if this is necessary. Try:
Code:
liloconfig
