I am running Slax and every time I logout as a non-root user all of the mods/permissions I have made to /dev/cdrom, /dev/hdb, and /dev/snd is gone! I have to spend literally hours reconf everything to play a damn cd again!
Let me say that I love using Slax Linux on my computers BUT... does anyone HONESTLY believe the average user is going to spend HOURS learning how to chmod 777 his sound&audio, nano /etc/fstab, change groups, alsaconf, logout and login to play a **damn music cd???
Maybe they would have in 1991, people just expect this stuff to "just work" these days. There's good reason why by default all users shouldn't have access to /dev/cdrom.... but sound and alsamixer??? I mean come on!!
I've moved this thread to the Slackware forum because chances of you getting help are probably higher there. In other distros you do not have to do the things you mentioned above in order to play audio discs, so your "problem" is no longer common in Linux because things are just automatically configured.
Can you please confirm you mean Slax? If yes, where is it being run from? Live CD, USB, harddisk, etc?
Also, fwiw, I second simcox1's recommendations. You can find out more about user groups and so on from http://www.slackbook.org/ , if you've not already visited there.
If this was slackware I'd tell you to save your sound configuration by running the following commands at a root shell prompt.
#alsaconf
#alsamixer
#alsactl store
Also add your regular user to plugdev, cdrom, audio, video.
I know slax is based on slackware, that might work. Is there a slax forum where you can get help? Good luck with this:-)
I did have the Back|Track/Slax installed to HD. All of my mucking about with chmod's as root and I somehow messed my Lilo up so now I have to re-install Lilo. I can only access things on my HD right now thru my live-cd's...
