Sound & Kernel

Well I have a question and what a better place to ask then in the slackware forum. Anyway I have just installed Slackware 10.0 on my primary box and I decided that I wanted to upgrade to the 2.6 series of kernel, I chose to install kernel 2.6.7. This all goes well I select my sound drivers correctly within the menuconfig and I have all my settings the way that i like them yet I am never able to get my sound working in my new kernel. The sound works well in Windows and in the 2.4 series. I know that my sound does work with this kernel I am just dumbfounded on why my sound is unable to work. If you have any insight into my situation I would appreciate it. As well what are the required steps that I should take to upgrade to kde 3.3 ? Thanks again. Cheers!

I think we need to know a bit more about your system here.

What kind of card are you using?
Or is it 'onboard' sound?

It's almost certain that you haven't quite complile the correct sound card in your kernel or loaded the right module.

try lspci, to give a list of hardware on your box.

As for KDE 3.3, I might be stupid, but I've always found the best way to upgrade is to simply use pkgtool to remove all the KDE packages then download (or use swaret, slap-get etc) to download/install the latest version.

As removing KDe doesn't delete the settings file from /home/youruser you will carry on with you old settings (unless you deliberatly delete these files)

Obviously some more complex dependancies might come into it. but if you look at the change logs provided by Pat at www.slackware.com, he lists the dependancies for every package.:-)

I am using a PCI creative soundblaster. I have disabled my onboard to avoid complications.

can you still give me

lspci

if you want my help....

AS I recall from painful experiences in the past, upgrading the kernel can screw alsa.
As such I highly recomment removing all the alsa packages and installing the latest verions. Or at leasat the ones that came with your distro.

Have you run the following commands yet?

alsaconf
alsamixer
alsactl store

this runs alsa that will set up your card. but i would still recommend getting a new version of alsa.

Anyway, the output of

lsmod

would be helpful

I can't do this for you....

What I did to get sound working on 2.6 series was to compile the kernel with Sound card Support and then get alsa from it's site and compile it (this will create the necessary alsa modules to get your card working).
