some questions and problems with slackware 13.37

hey
i just installed 13.37 and i am having problem connecting to my phone's hot spot. i have a Nokia N86 (symbian) and i am using joikuspot for making hotspot. the program says on some computers you should enable "Ad-hod only mode" to be able to connect to the Wi-Fi network. and i can't connect to it using wicd. it just doesn't connect without saying anything.

and a question: can i change my 13.37 to -current just by enabling current mirrors and doing an update? won't it damage my installation?

thx

Updating to -current will replace your 13.37 installation with -current. Backup important files like WiFi configuration. I think it's safe to run -current but sometimes your system will break if there are bugs or problems with upstream packages.

how bad. it is essential that my system won't break. i will forget about that.
another thing: does ATI closed-source driver have any problem with my slackware?
i tried installing it but my screen just went blank, and i used DVD to delete driver and use the kernel one.
am i missing anything?

The proprietary driver should work fine on Slackware 13.37, assuming you have supported hardware. How did you install the driver?

i just made the package "fglrx-8.892-x86-1.tgz" by running the script(downloaded from AMD site). the installed it using installpkg.
after that , i ran "aticonfig --initial" and a reboot. but screen blanks when X starts (before that i can see everything).
and the version, i have 11.9 version of AMD driver.

--------------------------
sry for my questions. i am now trying to make my slackware customized for myself. i tried updating using slackpkg.
but it says i have kernel 2.6.37 and 2.6.38 installed and i have to remove one of them. since 2.6.37 had some problem, i installed 2.6.38 from testing on DVD and it is working fine. but when i want to update, slackpkg downloads and install 2.6.37, how can i tell it not to install that kernel?

Uncomment the lines in /etc/slackpkg/blacklist below this
Code:
# Automated upgrade of kernel packages aren't a good idea (and you need to
# run "lilo" after upgrade). If you think the same, uncomment the lines
# below
#

thelastblack, after installing the fglrx driver, did you blacklist the radeon module and/or add "nomodeset" as an option to the kernel to disable KMS?

thx for slackpkg help. it worked.
another thing about slackpkg: doesn't it have resume for download? sometimes my wireless connection drops and download stops. when i rerun slackpkg, it just starts downloading again(if download was not successful). i tried adding "-c" to wget options in slackpkg.conf, but it is still like that.
can't i make slacpkg to download using another tool(like aria2 or axel)? and how to add resume for downloads?

----------------------------------------------

and for fglrx, nope, i did not blacklist radeon. do i have to do it? i just did "aticonfig --initial" to make the right xorg.conf for fglrx. now i have changed xorg.conf to use radeon instead. how do i blacklist radeon? and i just have to add "nomodeset" to kernel boot settings?

I do not know if the package you created from the installer will blacklist the radeon kernel module, but it must be done, yes. Create a fall called /etc/modprobe.d/radeon-blacklist.conf and put just this line in it:

Code:
blacklist radeon
Then edit /etc/lilo.conf and add 'nomodeset' to the arguments appended to the kernel. Re-run lilo, of course, reboot, and then try fglrx. Do not start X with the 'radeon' driver before you try fglrx, because that will cause the radeon kernel module to load.

hey, thx. fglxr now works. but another problem...

i can't connect to my internet thorough a wireless network with WPA2 enterprise with PEAP/MSChapV2.
i have a username and password and i did the right settings in wicd(kde client). but it just hangs @ authenticating stage and then says bad password. i have to say that i don't have this problem in ubuntu with the same username and password. can this be a bug in wicd or my wireless driver(atheros ar9285)?

You should really start creating separate threads for different problems.

If you can use a wired connection with your Slackware box you may wish to consider installing networkmanager for your wireless connection. I've recently switched from wicd to nm. You can get nm here: networkmanager
