I started using snownews again, now that its part of Slackware, after spending quite some time using google reader.
The problem is that snownews, only on x86_64 AFAIK, doesnt mark all feeds as read. So if you reload the feed, the articles you have read will be flagged as unread.
For example, among others, the following feeds are always reloaded:
I say it only happens on Slackware64 and not 32bit because i had the exact issue on another 64bit distribution about a year ago, but never under 32bit ones.
I had also contacted the application developer without ever hearing back.
Does anyone know what's the deal or has similar problems?
Well, nice to see someone else caring besides myself.
It used to be my favourite news reader too, until i switched to x86_64.
FWIW i contacted Pat about this and his reply was that 13.0 will ship with snownews
and the issue will be further investigated, with a possible replacement of the application
in the next development cycle.
Your post intrigued me. Never tried snownews before - thanks.
Can't say I can confirm your problem on my Slackware64 install. Maybe I'm doing something wrong.
Launched snownews from Terminal in Xfce, added all of the feeds you have listed. Made sure to read 15 out of 30 on the one, the other had 100 new, so I cycled through all of them. Closed snownews, re-opened, the unread/read count was correct even after r and or R to refresh. Hit m to mark all as read, closed snownews, reopened, all were still marked as read.
Could it be a language/locale?
---edit----
Are you completely up to date with current? There was a snownews rebuild not too long ago (Fri Jul 17).

Did you try reloading them after marking them as read with m by pressing r or R?
Does snownews still mark the articles you read before as read or as unread?
Also no, i haven't tried a different locale. I always used en_US.UTF-8
Are you certain you are testing this on your Slackware64 installation?
Sorry for asking but this issue has been confirmed by others too.
Also do you add with a one of the above feeds, mark it as read with m, and then reload it with r and get no unread feeds?
Positive it's 64-current . I added every feed you have listed.
Install a fresh stock 64-current in a VM and see if you have the same issue.
Can you point to links of the others that have had the issue? I've only seen one brief post in an Arch forum.
I've created a screen cast showing cat /etc/slackware-version uname, and me reading refreshing the feeds.
I'll update this post as soon as I find somewhere to put it
No need for that. I take your word for it.
I don't have links to "success" stories.
But the problem has been verified by BP{k} (Michiel van Wessem) in ##slackware, as well as the fact that the behaviour is different on 32bit.
Plays directly in Firefox 3+ thanks to html5 and ogg-theora
Nice video, but i noticed that you didnt press m at any point.. does that make a difference?
(although pressing r on a feed marks all of them as unread here)
I mean m to mark all feeds as read in the main screen. Anyway you cant seem to be able to reproduce it for some unknown (to me) reason.
Is this a full installation Slackware 13.0 installation?
