snmp on localhost

i successfully set up snmpd (from linuxpackages.net.....) and can query some routers with

snmpwalk -Os -c public -v 1 rou-gw-switch-1-vpn-cablecom.vpn-cablecom.ethz.ch interface

and i get the desired information....

but when i try to do this with my linuxbox, there is only a error message

Timeout: No Response from localhost

my /etc/snmpd.conf only contains this string

rocommunity public

does anyone has an idea ?

First of all you have to setup the snmpd on your machine. You need to run the command, as root, `snmpconf -i` and configure your daemon, or edit the config file manually. Next you'll need to start the daemon with this line, or something like it `/usr/local/sbin/snmpd -c /usr/local/share/snmp/snmpd.conf` Next make sure your firewall permits port 161 udp access and you should be all set.
