Question slax livecd and software installations ... ?

i was wondering how a livecd such as slax stores and manages software installations ...

i mean , i have booted from slax and installed xchat .. where does it store this xchat .. i can understand this if i booted from my slackware HDD , whatever i write , install etc it gets written to HDD .. but when using a livecd , what happens exactly ..

this maybe a really stupid question ..err but i can figure out how . please excuse my ignorance

Slax and Slackware are different - I respectfully suggest you post Slax specific questions at the Slax forum.

If your question is more general with regards to live CD persistence or package management then there's lots of information on Goolge. For example here's an article about live CD creation.

Well any change not stored to disk is lost between reboots. Live cd's usually have virtual file system that is like a Ram disk. Changes (installs and the like) are not persistent unless permanent storage is allocated - some have a facility to store some changes.
