Slackware64-current-live not booting on new UEFI system.
Hello.
Hopefully someone can help me. I have new ThinkPad X13 Gen 2 AMD. I downloaded AlienBOB's Slackware Live from https://slackware.nl/slackware/slack...-current-live/ this evening and I dd'd it to a usb thumbdrive like any other iso. I checked the md5 of the downloaded iso and it passed.
This is my first UEFI system, but I did disable secure boot. I have never tried Slackware Live so maybe I missed a step. I am not familiar with grub but, when I boot off of the thumbdrive I am presented with a grub command prompt. I tried running the "linux" and "boot" commands on multiple files within the the "cd0/boot" directory. I got an error message saying that I need to load a kernel.
I tried searching around for an answer but I have not found one. Does anyone have an idea on what the problem is?
On my Main box, Boot Menu p[resents me with 2 options when I have CSM (Legacy Boot) enabled, one old style device listed and one UEFI. On some bootloaders, for example the multiple bootloader AIO Booth, I see 4 entries for the 1 USB drive and only the 3rd one boots. For Slack Live I get 2 and the 2nd one gives the GUI bootloader menu.
Also, FWIW YMMV, some multiple boot option thumbdrives don't always work for me with DD. I like looking at the actual bootable image in the iso with isomaster (it's on slackbuilds.org) to verify, and then I use unetbootin. That always works.
EDIT: Actually I just remembered some installer I tried (Mageia maybe?) specified that untebootin would not work and OpenSuse recommends their own image burner. I don't know why some isos are finicky but apparently some are. Also, iirc, Live Slack has an iso2usb script that works a treat.
What I have used for this purpose is the site at the link below and am currently running Slack Live on my HP having used this method. I used the setup2hd script to install it to a HD. The iso2usb script mentioned in the above post and described at the link works very well and explains things in detail. This is the best site to go to for information
Issue resolved. Thank you all. Writing to the thumbdrive with iso2usb.sh fixed it.
Current is looking great. Pretty much everything worked on the new laptop except for the wifi card. It looks like the Realtek RTL8852AE wifi card requires the rtw89 driver. I guess kernel 5.15 does not include it yet. I guess I will use a dongle.

That rtw89 driver will indeed be included in Linux kernel 5.16.
