Slackware13 64 bit help with xorg.conf

Ive been trying to get my slackware 13 up and running since the day it came out, and ive gotten just about everything exactly the way i want it, however, for some reason, i cant startx with an xorg.conf. it works fine when i boot up without one, until i try to change the desktop appearance to enable desktop effects. I check the box for enable desktop effects, choose apply, and it gives me the error message: "Failed to activate desktop effects using the given configuration options. settings will be reveted back to their previous values. Check your X configuration. You may also consider changing your advanced options, especially changing the compository type." I went to the xorg.conf, and it wasnt created. so i exited x completely, and ran x -configure. it generated a xorg.conf.new file for me. i copied it to /etc/X11/xorg.conf, and ran startx again. this time i just got a black screen. i copied the log for that, and this is what i got:

My graphics card is an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650, my lspci gives the following specification:

if you have an entry in your xorg.conf

I'd suggest to change it to

The open source driver radeon, at least the one included in Slackware 13, doesn't appear to support your GPU. You can try with radeonhd, as markush suggested. That *might* give you basic 2D, but no acceleration unless you use the 2.6.30.* kernel from /testing. And, even then, the acceleration will be 2D only.

For 3D acceleration, you will need to install the closed source driver from AMD. You can download it here:

You would then run the downloaded installer like so:

./ati-driver-installer-9-8-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Slackware/All

And then you'd use 'installpkg' on the generated packages. Create an xorg.conf file with 'aticonfig --initial' and startx.

@adam: that worked perfectly. in fact, after installing the driver, desktop effects were automatically enabled. thanks a bunch.
