slackware performance on different brands of cpu?

Does slackware run slower on amd cpus compared to intel? I just read some articles on compilers optimized for intel cpus via the 'GenuineIntel' check. CPUs' not bearing intel cpuid will be run in non-optimized mode. It's part of Intel & AMD anti-trust settlement.

Just asking if someone could elaborate on the matter. Thanks.

Only if you're using icc, the Intel compiler, that's the only time this would happen ... yes evil Intel. Don't worry tho, Slackware is compiled with GCC not icc.

Fog also offers up a number of workarounds, such as using GNU GCC, whose optimisations are similar to that of Intel's compiler, "but the Gnu function library (glibc) is inferior". You can also patch Intel's CPU dispatcher - Fog even provides a patch to do so in "Optimizing software in C++: An optimization guide for Windows, Linux and Mac platforms".

AMD have develop their own gcc, favoring Opterons. But this could be a thing of the past now.

That's BS, why is it inferior ? They never mentioned why glibc is inferior to Intel ... I don't believe it. I need proof. GCC is a damn good compiler and it's FLOSS, even if icc is slightly better in performance, especially on Intel processors, it better be way better, and it still won't be enough to make me switch.

As for AMD having their own version of GCC, are you sure it isn't just regular gcc ?

You can recompile slackware from source if you want to, but I bet you'd get better performance from the start if you used slackware64.

It's not about whether glibc is inferior. I just want to make sure gcc doesn't follow intel's optimization style of amd cpus, therefore downgrading the performance of non-intel chips.

Can someone point me in the right direction? thanks.

GCC is developed independently and is FLOSS, so I'm quite positive that it has the best performance possible on any CPU, be it Intel, AMD, ARM, etc.
