Maybe keyboard mapping issue? Do you have non US keyboard, or maybe caps lock in?

In addition to keefaz's questions, once we have figured out what caused your issue, you can boot off the Slackware disc, chroot to your installation, and then change the password for root (and any other users you've created).

I am using the standard qwerty keyboard, and I have tried with every combination of caps lock on and off with no success.

If you cannot figure it out you may be stuck with bassmadrigal's suggestion. Boot from CD chroot and then reset all of the passwords (make sure you write them this time) ;-)

I tried installing slackware and the same problem occure. I wrote the password down this time. Could it be that some of the characters are capitalized and I used caplocks instead of shift. when it starts it says the following

chuck login: (i hit enter)
password: (i enter password and enter)

it says incorrect password

You should reinstall and use a really simple password no caps numbers or anything it that works just be careful when you change the password to something more appropriate.

Are you booting into runlevel 3 or runlevel 4?

It shouldn't be...

Code:
chuck login: (i hit enter)
password: (i enter password and enter)
it should be (assuming your machine name is chuck)...

Code:
chuck login: (I type user name and hit enter)
password: (I enter password and enter)
You must enter the user name and the password - there is no default or empty user name.

Can you verify that is what you mean't or try it. If it doesn't work please tell us exactly what you see, wht you type and what the result is.

For the information we have, I agree with this, the installer ask you for the 'root' password... On first login, you should log as 'root' (login) and the asked password... THEN you can (must) add a normal user with its own login name and password... Sorry if you already knew this, it's just that your posts seems to expose this kind of mistake.

I think I get what happened. When booting up the installer, you don't need to type in a username (or password, for that matter). You just press Enter and you're logged in. That doesn't work outside the installer. As others have said above, you need to type in your username (hit enter), then type in your password (and hit enter).

Also, as NoStressHQ mentioned, make sure you set up a new, regular user. You shouldn't do your normal work as root as it has serious security implications. Only escalate privileges when needed to minimize security concerns. The adduser script makes adding a new user easy (so you don't have to remember a complex command). When it asks for additional groups, make sure you press the "up" button so you assign yourself to the recommended groups.
