the newest versions should work ok. just don't try to do anything too fancy on it.

Slackware will work fine, just don't expect to run a desktop environment

I have a Pentium 233MHz computer with 64mb ram running slackware 10.0. Everything works fine and it still pretty responsive when at the terminal. However, to use a X I can only run Fluxbox and there is noticeable lag.

nah, I run Slack 10 with fluxbox on a P100 w/mb RAM, works just fine
I also tried with XFCE, just a bit slower
of course, compiling a kernel takes over an hour...

not likely. As mentioned, you might be able to get away with a light DE, like fluxbox, xfce, or blackbox.

Please do not post the same thread in more than one forum. Picking the most relevant forum and posting it once there makes it easier for other members to help you and keeps the discussion all in one place.
