I'm thinking about downloading Slackware 9 with a 56k modem. I want to ask a few questions before i download. How do i install Slackware and how do i make the partitions for Slackware?? I have a PCTEL Platinum V. 90 modem. Will that recognize in Slackware?? I'm going to download Slackware 9.0 from http://www.linuxiso.org. Does that site has any probles by downloading or do you think i should download from someone else?? oh yeah my modem is a internal winmodem. Will it recognize all of my hardware?? Please reply back. Thank You for any help.
I downloaded slack 9 from linuxiso.org no problem, should be a safe bet. Also I have had no problems with installation, all my hardware was recognized and set up automatically.
Partitions are set up pretty much the same as the other distros, I just give a big chunk for /, and then the old "twice your system memory" trick for swap. Pretty basic, although you can set it up in any number of ways.

I agree with dryhyte. Having only modem dialup internet access is the reason I got the 4-set slack cds. It'll save you hours of download time, especially if you have problems with dropped connections.

I was on a modem line unti a few month ago,
and downloaded slack8.1 iso with wget ;) ...
took me almost a week :D
Yeah, well I was using Download Accelerator Plus (Which it does by the way), and if you double click on the file download, it restarts it, you have to hit the resume button to resume. Very unintuitive and it cost me a week of downloading. I wrote a letter.
Wget is awesome, I have had 0 problems with it, except that if I just close xterm, it still keeps going, theres probobly a way to get it to close when you close the terminal, but Im too tired to find out.
I think for the amount of money it 'll cost you to download Slack, you 'd better buy it somewhere...
???, it doesn't cost anything to download.
I also downloaded slack 9 with 56k. Took about 5 days, was the only phone line so couldnt leave on 24/7. If you are gettting straght through no stops, should take 48 hours TOPS, if you connect in upper 40's then closer to 40 hours.
Luckily now have ISDN so iso's take about 8-10 hours

Cable modem here.. usually about an hour and a half on average download..
I once downloaded StarOffice 5.2 which was 100 megs in about 3 minutes once too..
If I had the phone line tied up for 40 or more hours straight my wife would kill me..... $40.00 for the store bought 4cd set is worth it if all you have is a dial-up connection.
Just curious, what is the difference between the storebought 4 cd's and the single iso that can be downloaded? I have the downloaded version, and it seems like I have the complete slackware package. Are certain things left out?
