Slackware 9.0 stops working

Slackware 9.0 system employing reiserfs running KDE suddenly
will not open a console or activate any of the KDE menus/programs.

Could not Ctrl-Alt-Delete to exit KDE or reboot. Had to turn the
machine off. Tried to boot up after shutdown; LILO menu
appears and begins to boot Slackware but cannot load kernel.

Setup is dual boot:

Win98 hda1
Linux swap hda2
Linux root hda3

LILO installed on MBR. Slackware linux boot record on hda3.

Sounds like the boot record on hda3 has somehow become corrupted
but I cannot use the install disk to reconfigure. My SYSLINUX boot
disk does not seem to work; something corrupted there.

Excerpt from SYSLINUX boot process:

vs-13070: reiserfs_read_inode2: i/o failure occurred trying to find
stat data of [1 2 0x0 sd]
using r5 hash to sort names
Reiserfs Version 3.6.25
VFS: Cannot open root device "hda3" or 3:03
Please append a correct "root=" boot option (hda3 is correct)
kernel panic: vfs: unable to mount root fs on 3:03

I cannot mount hda3 after using Tom's RB since that kernel doesn't
support reiserfs.

I'm not sure what's going on here, it may even be a hardware
problem although Win98 still boots correctly.

Any suggestions?

TIA

What is the output when you try to boot without the boot disk? So far it sounds like something to do with your file system is messed up.

Oh how right you are!. I played around with my install disk to see what
I could do. I tried going through the installation procedures regarding
the swap setup and after my already established swap partition was
recognized, I hit enter to reselect it. I then got a torrent of error messages
as it went through trying to access sectors. Looks something like:

hda: read_intr: status=0x59 {DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error
}
hda: read_intr: error=0x01 {AddrMark Not Found}, LBASect.....

Since I was still using the install CD, I tried to do an fsck but the answer
came back reiser.fcsk not found or something to that effect.

Any atttempt to: mount -t resierfs /dev/hda3 /mnt results in

Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 00000018

and then a CPU register dump.

Is there any boot disk available with reiser.fcsk capability?

Tried the Knoppix CDROM to try and access my Linux partitions.
The default KDE bootup would not work for some reason. However,
I was able to start it in a console mode (Knoppix 2) and run
resierfsck on my hda3 partition.

Unfortunately, I ran into disk access problems and the eventual
error message below:

reiserfsck 3.6.11 (2003 www.namesys.com)

*************************************************************
** If you are using the latest reiserfsprogs and it fails **
** please email bug reports to reiserfs-list@namesys.com, **
** providing as much information as possible -- your **
** hardware, kernel, patches, settings, all reiserfsck **
** messages (including version), the reiserfsck logfile, **
** check the syslog file for any related information. **
** If you would like advice on using this program, support **
** is available for $25 at www.namesys.com/support.html. **
*************************************************************

Will read-only check consistency of the filesystem on /dev/hda3
Will put log info to 'stdout'

Do you want to run this program?[N/Yes] (note need to type Yes if you do):
The problem has occurred looks like a hardware problem.
If you have bad blocks, we advise you to get a new hard
drive, because once you get one bad block that the disk
drive internals cannot hide from your sight, the chances
of getting more are generally said to become much higher
(precise statistics are unknown to us), and this disk drive
is probably not expensive enough for you to risk your time
and data on it. If you don't want to follow that advice,
then if you have just a few bad blocks, try writing to the
bad blocks and see if the drive remaps the bad blocks (that
means it takes a block it has in reserve and allocates it
for use for requests of that block number). If it cannot
remap the block, this could be quite bad, as it may mean
that so many blocks have gone bad that none remain in
reserve to allocate.

bread: Cannot read the block (2): (Input/output error).

It would appear the hard disk has developed some bad sectors and
ReiserFS cannot handle them. I suppose my whole disk is now trashed
at least the Linux partitions. I will try to reinstall Slackware and use ext2
as the filesystem.

However, prior to doing this, I would like to try to recover some data
on the partition just to see if it is possible. Symantec's Norton utilities
use to have a low-level file recovery capability for use in just this type
of situation. I would like to know if there are any recovery tools for
Linux that can accomplish this task.

Any suggestions?
