Hello, It's my first time posting so thanks for letting me on here and I hope to learn and contribute as well. I've been haveing an issue with slackware for along time now..Slackware was the first *nix i cut my teeth on and I havent really strayed elsewhere. The issue I have was never of much worry because I mainly used slackware in the shell so I could get comfortable with *nix and slackware. But now I have become more comfortable with it and I would like to fix this as I start to use Slackware as my main GUI setup. I have a Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum sound card along with 5.1 creative lab speakers..I installed Slackware 11 huge26 along with the headers and modules and checked alsamixer and stored it with alsactl. And I still do not get sound...I never got sound before but it was never a bother. It might be quite newbish but any help would be greatly appreciated. There are many things to configure in the alsamixer but I made sure PCM and MAster and some others werent muted and cranked up but still no luck. Thank You
Welcome to LQ. First thing to check are the basics: are the speakers turned on, are they plugged into the correct jack on the sound card, is the volume knob turned up, is the mute button on, if you have a soundcard and onboard sound is the onboard sound disabled (via BIOS), is the volume slider controller of your sound app (XMMS, kaffeine, etc) turned up sufficiently, are the correct kernel modules loaded....
You seem to have made all the checks. As J.W. asked, is there an onboard card which becomes the default one? If so, you can disable it by blacklisting it (in hotplug or udev, whichever you use).
Hey guys, Thanks for the help!!! J.W I have an Asus A7V333 im not sure on the onboard audio but ill be rebooting in a few so ill get into BIOS to let you know whats up but if memory serves me right. I dont even think I have onboard audio...I have checked the basics of making sure plugs were connected and sliders and etc...Fogie I tried your advice but it didnt work...
LSMOD gives me....

are your sound apps working but just with no sound or do they error out when you try to start a sound apps. you might try disabling arts or check dmesg to see if the irq for your sound is disabled. you can try pci=routeirq or disable acpi with acpi=off at the kernel boot command line
