Slack 10 2.6.7 Swap Use Problem

I updated my kernel following the instructions with Slack 10 in /boot. When I booted into 2.6.7, it said that the swap format was obsolete and said to

bash# mkswap -v1 /dev/hda2

instead. So.... I did the following

bash# swapoff /dev/hda2
bash# mkswap -v1 /dev/hda2
bash# swapon /dev/hda2

Now when I push my laptop to the limits using up all RAM, it never uses the swap file. I've never seen it used when I type "free" in the bash. Am I misunderstanding the use of the swap file? To test it I open a lot of videos in xine to eat up memory yet it never uses the swap file. Anyone have any ideas? Heres the output of dmesg of the swap portion

"Adding 120476K swap on /dev/hda2. Priority: -1 extentents: 1"

Just as an added note. The "System Monitor" in KDE shows that im using significantly less RAM then the "free" command. Maybe I'm misunderstanding the "free" command? For example, I have 400MB of RAM, "free" says I am using "300mb" whereas "System Monitor" is showing me using "180mb"

thoughts and comments would be greatly appreciated!
