Shutdown in X seconds! Hey where did that come from??

Hi, at least once a day I get a little pop up dialogue kindly informing me the system is going to be shutdown in X amount of seconds. Nice, but I did not initiate any shutdown. Fortunately I have the option to cancel, assuming I am at my desk, otherwise I have a dead computer to return to.

Any ideas?

BashTin.

Is this random or does it happen after a set amount of inactive time? If the latter, I'd check your power management settings in whatever desktop environment you're using.

Yes seems random.

In Power Management I have these settings checked.

Code:
General Settings:
        Lock screen on resume.
Let PowerDevil manage screen power saving.
AC Adaptor plugged in - performance

Profiles: (Just list 'performance' as this is the profile I am using)
   Action:
System idel for 99 minutes - do nothing
        lid closed - lock screen
power button pressed - prompt log out dialog
sleep button pressed - Suspend to RAM

   Screen:
Enable display management - standby after 20, suspend after 30
Thats it. Don't see anything about shut down and this is a desktop so some of that is irrelevant anyway. Any other ideas?

You have to track back on stuff like this...

- when did it first start doing this?
- what changes had you made prior to that?
- does anyone have physical access to the machine?
- does anyone have ssh access?

et cetera...

You see what I mean. More info you can provide here the better. What Desktop Environment? What power manager app. On my Slack I have two... Xfce's manager and the one in Xscreensaver.

- when did it first start doing this?
Tricky one. Not sure really. Been doing it perhaps for a couple of months on and off. Seems quite random. I know I said 'at least once a day' but that is not entirely accurate. I leave the system on over night and occasionally in the morning it has powered off. I know it was not a power outage as it powers back up cleanly without having to do a reiserfs check. And as mentioned other times I get the dialogue pop up during the day and other times I come back to find the computer shutdown. This has been going on a couple of months but just put up with it - until today.

- what changes had you made prior to that?
Tricky one too. Lots, installed packages but nothing that should effect shutdown I would have thought.
Code:
aMule-2.3.1-i486-1_SBo.tgz	    gc-7.1			      libsigc++-2.2.9		     wicd-client-kde-0.2.1-
aircrack-ng-1.0_rc3-i486-1_SBo.tgz glibmm-2.28.2 libupnp-1.6.17-i486-1_SBo.tgz wine-1.4-i486-1_SBo.tgz
allegro-4.4.2-i486-1_SBo.tgz graphviz-2.28.0 lxml-2.3.4 wireshark-1.6.5-i486-1_SBo.tgz
atkmm-2.22.4 gsl-1.15 memtest86-4.0a-i486-1_SBo.tgz xonotic-0.6.0-i486-1_SBo.tgz
cairomm-1.9.8 gtkmm-2.24.0 nexuiz-2.5.2-i486-1_SBo.tgz pangomm-2.28.1
cowpatty-4.6-i486-1_SBo.tgz inkscape-0.48.3-i486-1_SBo.tgz numpy-1.6.1 pingus-0.7.3-i486-1_SBo.tgz
enet-1.2.1-i486-1_SBo.tgz kismet-2011_03_R2-i486-1_SBo.tgz rtmpdump-2.3-i486-1_SBo.tgz
- does anyone have physical access to the machine?
Nope
- does anyone have ssh access?
Nope - sshd not running.

Xscreensaver -screensaver disabled. Monitor power off after 25 minutes
Desktop KDE 4.5.5

So I have a dialogue pop up informing me it is going to shut down, just need to track down what is responsible. Any more ideas........ anyone?

If possible, disconnect from your network, physically unplug your network cable for a day or as long as possible and see if the problem still happens, overnight anyway. Long shot but worth a try...

Is your power button in a place where you might accidentally touch it when you are using your computer?

My main laptop has its power button exactly where my thumb would go to stabilize the computer when I might move it. It's given me a surprise shutdown a few times now... *grumble*

BashTin,

Do you leave your machine up with X running? If so, change to RL 1 (single user, no X) before leaving your machine for the night. See if it still shuts down. If not, your issue is probably with some setting in your GUI (KDE?).

Good idea. Will give it a shot.

How about overheating?

My old laptop which overheats rather quickly forces a shutdown on my laptop. The OS forces then the shutdown. My 2 cents.

What does ps afx tell you when this dialog box appears? (If the dialog box prevents you opening a terminal in KDE then switch to a virtual console instead, with Ctrl+Alt+F2 or F3.) Don't cancel the dialog box - ps afx should show you which process is invoking it.

Thanks for all the replies. Ok so it just happened again. Might be relevant, I don't know. But this was in KDE normal mode, not safe mode. Not sure if my other shutdowns were in normal or safe modes, will pay attention from now on. HOWEVER, checking the syslog on reboot I find......

Well there you have it in black and white. So come on all you hackers out there what is all this about and how do I stop my system shutting down randomly??

Thanks, BashTin.

Well, I can tell you this much...

Everything in that log entry is normal for a shutdown except the very first line:

Quote:
Aug 30 22:06:06 tuxbox kernel: [50757.516768] polkit-kde-auth[2378]: segfault at 8 ip b5c95a17 sp bf988820 error 4 in libglib-2.0.so.0.2800.6[b5c72000+ff000]
Polkit is crashing on you at shutdown. This may NOT be the cause of your shutdown, though, just a shutdown related polkit crash. There is MUCH reporting of this on the Web.

Is your system fully updated?

Might be a bit late for that one. It now gives

wtmp begins Fri Aug 31 01:40:20 2012

Thinking about it all this could be related to another issue I have with KDE which I did not resolve

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...gh-4175422776/

For now will keep running KDE in safe mode and see if the random shut downs disappear. If they do, will probably live with it until the big 14 and give that a try. If not will have to keep digging.

Thanks to all the help/suggestions so far. Keep them coming if you have any more!

BashTin.
