Samba and WinXP

Ok, i am getting so frustrated now. I have a WinXP system on my network that the server is slackware 9.0. I set up samba for file sharing and my XP machine sees it but when i go to connect it only wants a guest account with a password for that account and i can't login! i even tried changing the password for the guest account in smbpasswd and that didn't work. Maybe my smb.conf file is wrong? What do i do??? i need to be able to connect to my server! TIA
