I just installed slackware a couple of days ago. finally I was able to get X working, when I do startx as root. It is not working when I do startx as user?
I tried to edit my /etc/inittab to change default runlevel to 4. X failed, I think it said something about GDE failing? what is GDE? if I am useing KDE, does that use something called KDM? I am lost
If you installed GNome and KDE, then as aaa says, Slackware will try to start the Gnome login manager (gdm) BEFORE the KDE login manager (kdm) because of what is set up in rc.4
Maybe it's trying to start up gdm, but there was a problem with your Gnome installation?
From the console, you could try running kdm (just type 'kdm' in the command line) and see if that works for you. If it does then modify rc.4 so that kdm starts up first - if you still have problems, reply back.
Can you run gdm from the command line? If you can't then I think there's a problem with how it was installed.
Yes, you can choose KDE or Gnome desktop from the kdm login manager, and you can choose KDE or Gnome desktop from the gdm login manager.
