rotating dsktop?

This may actually be an X/xfce question, but I didn't see a forum for X here.

I have as ViewSonic 20" wide screen that works fine. But, I want to be able to on the fly rotate it 90 degrees, which is much better for working with documents. I know i can change xorg.conf and add
Options "Rotate" "CCW"
But, that requires editing the config file and rebooting, using runlevel 4.
Is there a way to cause the desktop view to rotate on the fly without going through all that?

I have built a custom LCD stand using a swivel and the VESA wall mounting holes. This way I can watch wide screen videos, and then rotate it to work on documents.

I get the following error

~ $ xrandr -o left
X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
Major opcode of failed request: 151 (RANDR)
Minor opcode of failed request: 2 (RRSetScreenConfig)
Serial number of failed request: 14
Current serial number in output stream: 14

Left, right and inverted all fail this way. The only one that does not generate the error is
xrandr -o normal

Had to modify xorg.conf for xrandr to work

In order to get xrandr -o left to work I had to add
Option "Rotate" "RandR"

To device section of xorg.conf.
