There's packages available in Slackware-Current I would *think* you could just download those and install them, but you might want to wait for someone else to verify that.
Yea, I don't really see the need to compile them your self. Have a look at his build script if you really want to tho. But then, if your just going to follow Slackware's build script, theres REALLY no reason not to just use the packages...

Yo need that package and x11-fonts-misc-6.8.2-noarch-1. If you plan to compile X programs (and it's very recommended to have this) you also need x11-devel-6.8.2-i486-1
