Recommendations for traffic shaping software?

Hi,

I'm often facing the problem of limited DSL bandwidth vs. too many client desktops. Solutions like a local DNS cache with Dnsmasq and transparent proxy cache with Squid work quite good, but there's still room for improvement. I think traffic shaping would be the next logical step.

I've never done traffic shaping before. I've vaguely heard about a piece of software called Trickle, though that doesn't seem to be maintained anymore.

If anyone is proficient in traffic shaping under Linux, I'm thankful for suggestions.

Cheers,

Niki

recent Linux, iptables and iproute2 (all available in stock Slackware) are all you need

There is a relatively nice brief intro on ArchWiki.

We use the shorewall firewall, which has this built-in.

You are using squid. I remember in my sysadmin days I used its delay pools very successfully. It was long ago but seemingly it still holds:
http://wiki.squid-cache.org/Features/DelayPools
http://adeptus-mechanicus.com/codex/.../sqddelay.html
http://quark.humbug.org.au/publicati.../aclsquid.html

Using this feature of squid you can make the user believe that he is not limited while doing regular browsing but you cut his bandwidth when he starts to download a big file.

Cheers
